My wife received a phone call the other day from Save the Children. Would we like to increase our standing order? Of course, she said. We know voluntary groups are finding it hard to raise money in the recession; and helping children in the developing world is a cause we want to support.
So why are we now cancelling our monthly donation? Because Save the Children, which we associated with helping youngsters in the developing world, is giving cash to parents in Britain for the first time, in what looks suspiciously like a political stunt. About £150,000 in donations, and later up to £1million, will be devoted to helping 1,000 of Britain's poorest families pay for basic essentials.
