2 projects look at human anatomy through stitchery

Shanell Papp’s skeleton is like most other anatomical models, except for one obvious and striking difference -  it’s crocheted.

Cuddly, knitted soft-sculpture is not how we would ordinarily imagine a model of bones, intestines, and other body parts. And that’s what makes it so very intriguing. The project was even featured in a publication by The Association of Clinical Pathologists.

The publication featured other craft projects such as a knitted hat shaped like a brain and a crocheted heart model.

Papp’s other anatomical project, ‘Bonebook,’ is a two-dimensional wall piece in which thread is used to create a skeletal drawing. The quality of the stitch work combined with the wildness of loose thread ends gives an unsettling and alluring feeling to the work.
