While the company may be past its glory days, the logo of Sony is still one of the most recognisable brand marks in the world today.
Greg Prichard of Prichard Design & History Studio recently unearthed a fascinating ad in a 1981 issue of TIME magazine that shows the finalists of the “Sony International Logotype Design Contest”.
The selected designs, while looking rather different from one another, reflect a style that seems particular to the time of their creation - the fact that one of the finalist entries was submitted by a designer in former West Germany also adds historical interest to the piece.
The prize money was divided equally among the three finalists as there was no clear winner among them—although Sony’s logo remained the same after the contest, this still provided an intriguing look at what it might have looked like if they had decided to adopt a new one.
